HAVE A (EYE)SAFE JULY 4TH!

Wow, can you believe that it's almost the Fourth of July! While the Center for Vision Loss would like kids and adults to have a blast, it's equally important to make sure that everyone can be left with happy memories. And that means playing it safe around fireworks. The website http://kidshealth.org contains some excellent tips for helping you make that possible. We have listed a few here:

  • Remember that fireworks, if not handled properly, can cause burns and eye injuries. It is better not to use any fireworks at home; instead enjoy the sights and sounds by attending a public display.
  • If you still wish to have fireworks at home, buy only legal ones and store them in a cool, dry place.
  • Kids should never play with fireworks. Firecrackers, rockets and sparklers are very dangerous. News coverage today (June 26, 2015) reported that a sparkler creates as much heat as a blow torch (1,800 degrees F)!
  • Use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents.
  • Be aware that fireworks can backfire or go in the wrong direction.
  • Wear eye protection and don't hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them them while lighting.
  • Don't allow kids to pick up pieces of fireworks after an event. Some may still be ignited and can explode at any time.
  • Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in a trash can.
  • Remember that pets with their sensitive ears can be frightened by fireworks. Keep them indoors to be safe and secure.

If you or your child is injured by fireworks, go to a doctor or hospital. If there is an eye injury, don't touch the eye or rub it. Don't flush out the eye with water or try to put ointment on it. Instead cut out the bottom of a paper cup, place it around the eye, and immediately seek medical attention-the person's eyesight may depend on it. If your skin gets burned, remove clothing from the burned area and run cool, not cold, water over the burn (no ice, please). Call your doctor immediately.

The Center for Vision Loss hopes everyone has a great and safe time on July 4th!
